California State Fair made their Subscribers WORK for their Prizes!

I worked with Cal Expo through my partnership with Ntelligent Systems. They began building their list months in advance of the California State Fair through a popular wine event as well as their E-Newsletters and Website. This allowed them to establish a list large enough so that it would be logical to begin communicating with their subscribers as soon as any event information was ready for release. Text Subscribers want to read a text for new info, not a repeat or reminder of something they already know. Above is a website screen shot from the Wine Event Text Promo and below is a website screen shot from the California State Fair Text Info Page.
The California State Fair did several trivia games for subscribers to participate in if they wanted to win prizes to concerts, preparing them with some knowledge about the performer(s) that evening. They also gave out several random prizes throughout the run of the Fair in addition to their Daily updates offering whatever was FREE at the Fair that day! The CA State Fair now has a list of over 3,500 subscribers to START them for any Text campaign they plan to do in the future after only having a less than 24% opt-out rate at the close of the Fair. Sacramento is also a lover of texting, just like Ventura:)
