The end of my summers are always bitter-sweet...I love winters on the coast, but it means the Fair Season is over for me. I enjoyed another great year of text messaging and social media consulting in the Fair Industry. Thank you to my clients of 2011-you were pure joy to work with!

I am SO proud of the Davis County Fair and their marketing genius I have experienced pre-fair! Their text message list subscribership has surpassed my participation estimates by a long-shot!!! I am pleased to say that with three days left until the fair even starts, this Fair is already beyond TOTAL participation estimates. In a first year of using text messaging, Fairs usually receive about 50% of their subscribership pre-Fair and the other 50% during-Fair since people are more excited to participate while at the event. Congratulations Davis County Fair and good luck with a great Fair!

I enjoyed a quick trip up to the Solano County Fair last week to provide them with a 1-on-1 Social Media Training Session. It's always so pleasing to hear the satisfaction after a hard day's work! Conferences are great, but 1-on-1's are SO necessary for some people. Thank you to Mike and staff for welcoming me into your Fair Office Home:)

Text Messaging is a goal for the California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta this year! They have been waiting for the right timing to reach those teens they always have swarm the fairgrounds for their Annual High School Madness night. This is the year for them, as their entertainment lineup also consists of a Swift Country Night with tribute music to Taylor Swift all night long. They couldn't see themselves passing up that perfect combo onto a silver texting platter:) I'm looking forward to this campaign's excitement as it will be the first text messaging campaign that has truly focused on the teenagers, the perfect example of natural adrenaline!

I am also looking forward to expanding texting in the state of Utah. I have been working with a fair there for a couple years and this year they were nice enough to send another fair my way, so Cheers to texting in Utah!

...and it's only February:)

I was just at the local Spencer's grocery store renting a movie from the "Rental Box" the other day and there was a sign to text for movie deals...so I did! And today I got a deal for a free movie and I didn't even have to purchase anything to get the free movie...WOOHOO!

Yesterday, Beach Butlerz confirmed their details with me for their first text campaign that will be airing in their new commercial at the Arroyo Grande movie theaters starting July 16! Movies and texting ~ they get it, do you? It's all about driving traffic exactly when it's needed!

I'm noticing a trend and whenever I notice a trend, I try to share it far and wide so here goes. For the last three years, I have participated in, as well as led, several group trainings for county fairs on Social Media. I don't think I have EVER walked out of a training without hearing at least one person say "I wish we could have spent more time creating our account." These seminars and conferences are fantastic to get individuals and businesses exposed to the benefits of social marketing, but people are so often overwhelmed with the idea of how to really get their accounts started and rolling for their initial exposure...not to leave out, which types of social media are actually going to benefit their specific business.

As I heard these comments more and more, I realized the need for one-on-one trainings, either for multiple staff within one business or just one individual for their own business...as long as there is extreme focus and specific hands-on experience applicable to their very own business. Just in the last month I have given three one-on-one trainings to people who have recently attended seminars they want to expand on the information while it is still fresh.

Thursday evening I opened my email and there it was, the news I have been waiting for...I was accepted onto the SLO Chamber Ambassadors Committee, but wait there's another email from a SLO Chamber person what is that...when I clicked there's another email accepting me onto the SLO Chamber Tourism Committee, COOL! I am laughing out loud at this point because I only applied for both thinking I'd love to get one and being so new, there's not a shot I'd get two, well I did...but wait, it doesn't stop there! Friday morning I opened yet another email from a SLO Chamber person and when I read that I had been accepted to the SLO Chamber Technology Committee I thought there must be a mistake. I thought I had only applied for two and remember trying to pick between Tourism and Technology, but I guess not, I guess I checked all three and now here I am...in three Networks and three Committees and loving every minute of it! I look forward to getting so involved with SLO, as any thankful Cal Poly Alumni should because they are so in love with living here! SLO, thank you for the warm welcome back gift of YOU. I have missed you dearly and have enjoyed reuniting for the last seven months! What a fun future we have to look forward to:)

IAFE Fun, Friends and Futures!

I had a great time at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions and look forward to what my year has in store as a result! For those of you who attended, I hope you took advantage of your free opportunity to try out a scavenger hunt by text so you can see what your patrons can go through if this awesome event takes place at your Fair! There are several other interactive ways to get your patrons to participate, the Hunts have just become the most popular way to entice participants to view your entire fairgrounds while they are there! For those of you who have already contacted me, I look forward to working with you next year. I also moderated a great roundtable discussion on Social Media. Plascencia Projects Walked for Hunger in Cayucos!

What an overwhelming turnout for such a great cause-the walk raised over $3,500 in just 3 short weeks! The Cayucos, Cambria, Morro Bay Hunger Walk brought out walkers and sponsors to help raise funds for the Cayucos Food Bank (part of the SLO County Food Bank Coalition). Even when times are tough, we need to remember that at least many of us don't have to worry about getting food on the table. There are many people in our communities every day that don't have a pantry or refrigerator to just go to and select what they would like to eat that day. The SLO County Food Bank Coalition helps out the hungry and can be helped/donated to financially all year round. They can buy so much more than we can with the same amount of money so if you can donate even $10, it makes a huge difference in so many lives by helping out with what you can! California State Fair made their Subscribers WORK for their Prizes!

I worked with Cal Expo through my partnership with Ntelligent Systems. They began building their list months in advance of the California State Fair through a popular wine event as well as their E-Newsletters and Website. This allowed them to establish a list large enough so that it would be logical to begin communicating with their subscribers as soon as any event information was ready for release. Text Subscribers want to read a text for new info, not a repeat or reminder of something they already know. The California State Fair did several trivia games for subscribers to participate in if they wanted to win prizes to concerts, preparing them with some knowledge about the performer(s) that evening. They also gave out several random prizes throughout the run of the Fair in addition to their Daily updates offering whatever was FREE at the Fair that day! The CA State Fair now has a list of over 3,500 subscribers to START them for any Text campaign they plan to do in the future after only having a less than 24% opt-out rate at the close of the Fair. Sacramento is also a lover of texting, just like Ventura:)

Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue...I'm sure all of that was the case for me somehow, someway at the Antelope Valley Fair this year. I always seem to get involved with something old and something new, and every Fair has something borrowed, so I'm sure there was something blue! Something Blue: Okay, can we have something PINK instead because we had the first year of Real Men Wear Pink at the Fair for the Bull Riding...even though that wasn't part of my duties, I think it's a great cause!!!

Ventura County is Definitely a Lover of Texting!

Ventura County Fair patrons have proved to be VERY techie! They are so successful with MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and TEXTING! This was the second year working with Ventura County Fair and they are excited to TEXT again next year! They were able to start with over 800 subscribers on their list this year due to the loyalty of subscribers from the campaign last year and more than doubled their list size this year! Not only did they double it, but they will have a list of 1,800 to start them next year since less than 15% of the subscribers chose to opt-out at the close of the short-term campaign!

Above is a picture of the Scavenger Hunt by Text Finals Winners with their new flat screen TV, presented by the Fair CEO, Barbara and myself to the far left! In addition to the Hunt, Ventura County Fair had some great sponsors this year, offering a front row pair of seats and a $50 gift card for EVERY concert. They also take part in a Friends Referral program where friends get points for referring 15 people and if they stay on our list during the Fair then they are awarded a Carnival Wristband (a great incentive of which a dozen or so have won each year)! That's over 100 people who might not have heard about the Fair otherwise!

Shortest Text Campaign to Date, $500 Prize Reeled 'em In!

Monterey County Fair gave every effort to Reel 'em In this year...including a Scavenger Hunt by Text! As with many Fairs in California though, funds are VERY tight right now, so we were waiting on the confirmation of a sponsor before we got rolling...and they came through, several of them! So the week of Fair: off went a press release, up on the website it went and they took me up on the "Bathroom Signs," although the Maintenance crew was not convinced of WHY they were hanging signs and anyone would want to TEXT while they were taking care of business! Out of State Texting Fun with Weber County Fair!

The Weber County Fair Text Messaging Campaign included DAILY Trivia for great prizes as well as a Daily Scavenger Hunt where the Scavenger Hunt FINALS were by memory! The Final Contestants were given the clues before the gates opened and their Grand Prize would easily get them through the gates and off to enjoy a long FUN day at the Demo Derby.

One of my friends heard this Text Messaging Campaign was so much fun that they drove clear out to Utah just to participate...OKAY, maybe they just happened to be traveling through on vacation, but they still stopped at the Fair to check it out...my spies reported that hotels gladly hung Fair posters sporting the Text Promotion and explained how much fun they thought it was. My spies also made their way into the Admin building while they were at the Fair and learned how much fun the staff had with it as well, they even pulled down a couple posters for me and got me a t-shirt too!

I must share how much fun I am having interacting with Fair patrons through the Text Messaging Campaigns I'm involved with this month! August has turned into a very busy month, but it's a great reminder of "Word of Mouth" marketing when people can't help but spread the word about the latest prize they won!

Monterey County Fair just decided less than 2 weeks out from their Fair that they needed to at least give it a shot! So we'll have a Scavenger Hunt by Text ready to go for them by Wednesday when Fair opens!

It was a pleasure to visit with everyone, hear Fair updates, Future Planning and provide input on how Social Media is functioning for State & County Fairs. Facebook and Twitter were all the Buzz, so they remained our focus, but I also touched on the importance of Blogging, MySpace, E-Newsletters and Text Messaging. As a result, the Monterey County Fair will be hosting me in a couple weeks along with a handful of other Fairs who will be in attendance so that we can talk more in depth on how all these NEW FREE Marketing methods can play a benefitial role in your Fair and Year Round Events!

Marketing is so important to the Text Message Marketing Campaign and we definitely saw evidence of that in comparing this campaign from San Bernardino County Fair's 2008 to 2009 Years! You have to make people aware of the different mediums in which you use to provide them the information they want, then allow them to pick and choose which venues they wish to return to for their information. This is where being interactive becomes crucial because gone are the days where people simply read the newspaper…they would rather go to the newspaper site and see movement and click here and there and everywhere. So we need to keep this in mind in all the marketing we do, that it is interactive and catches the attention of our customers so that they will crave more of our information. If we use some interactive creativity, they will remember that they want to return to our information because it is new and different all the time. All of our marketing campaign was new and different this year, especially to our local area…we used approaches and jingles that stopped them in their tracks and we kept interacting with them every direction they turned, we didn’t just stop at a radio or newspaper ad. We gave them something to do in that ad, whether it was sending them to the website or texting in a keyword. Then when they got to that website or texted in, we gave them something to look at, a link to give them additional information or interact more in the social network of their choice, a ticket list for them to buy what they needed AT A DISCOUNT or sent them another text with more information on deals or contests! It never ended, we kept them interacting the WHOLE time!!!!!!!!! Big time WOOT to the SBC Fair Marketing Team this year!!!

Last year I began talking with the SBC Fair about Text Messaging, then Grounds Entertainment Scheduling, then Voice of Fair:) THEN a month after the Fair was over, I was asked to be more involved with the Grounds Entertainment by Hiring and Contracting, then came Social Media Blogging, MySpace & Facebook, then came School Tours and that's my list this year...oh wait next month...oh wait in two weeks! Oh my goodness, it all starts in just 15 days and I'm rearing to go:)

I also had the pleasure of filling in for the SBC Fair's CEO at the IAFE Convention in Las Vegas last December when he was unable to make it at the last minute. All this to say, I've enjoyed my time getting to know this Fair and it's players (both team players and players because we all PLAY at the Fair)!

It's very exciting to be part of the Antelope Valley Fair's first year of Entries being ONLINE, but when I think of all the companies I partnered with to make this one project possible...I'm even more excited!

I, Plascencia Projects, am in my 3rd season working with the AV Fair on various projects, only one of which is the Exhibits Department.
Ntelligent Systems, who I am recently working with all their Text Messaging Clients, also works with the AV Fair in providing their website service which of course I made use of, among other services they offer.

Two years ago at the IAFE convention, I was sitting at a table listening to a panel discuss best uses of a website. Little did I know that two years later, I would be in this line of work (within the Fair Industry of course) let alone be working side by side with one of the people sitting at that table with me that day. As soon as that panel discussion was over, Michael Geisen of Ntelligent Systems introduced himself to me and the rest is history! We've stayed in touch and decided, this year, that we would be complimentary partners in the Fair Industry.

Managers Don't Forget How to Play!

I took a picture with the girls again as a break from Concessions Auditing:) I played Parking Coordinator for a day too(2 firsts at this Fair)!

I just returned from the California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta in Imperial where the attitudes were definitely something for the rest of the industry to pay attention to this year! This Fair was basically put together in eight weeks with a fantastic and hard working crew of very FEW, yet their spirits were held high and every staff member kept a smile all the way through:) If every Fair can go into their Fair with these kind of spirits and remember what Fairs are really about, we WILL make it through these "tough" economic times.

This Fair is extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic community man named Daryl for their Board President. Above, Daryl dressed up for Adult Livestock Showmanship, in uniform.

Interim CEO, Theresa Garcia, shouts rules for the 1st Annual Guns & Hoses event for local law enforcement...plenty of people were bummed that evening as they were desperately looking all over the fairgrounds for the Guns & Roses concert, but were pleasantly surprised by the community fun had by watching 10 teams (1 all female team) come out to become rivals in events such as tug-o-war and hula-hooping! Other great management help at the Guns & Roses event was Robin Hauck, who came to the Fair to celebrate her 50th birthday and Carolann Meeks, who came to provide support in the Parking, Security and Operations of the 2009 Fair.

CFSA's Charlie Wigglesworth was able to mix a little play into his work as well as he helped out with the Paintball Target Shooting Contest during the Guns & Hoses Event while keeping a close eye on the safety of this event and the entire Fair.

WFA Award Winning Fairs - Innovative Advertising Using Technology!

Congratulations to three Fairs I worked with in 2008, receiving 1st and 2nd place awards in WFA's Award Category "Innovative Advertising Using Technology"

Competing against each other due to Fair size, the Amador County Fair and the Nevada County Fair won 1st and 2nd in the same class. They were both part of the year long project I did with the Mother Lode Area, building the basis for their social networking communities (screenshot samples shown below).

A very successful text messaging campaign with the Ventura County Fair also won a WFA award for 2008. Below are some pictures from the popular Daily Scavenger Hunt's FINALS.

We were able to invite a few Fair people, but because the name of the roundtable only included Service Members...some may have missed out.

I will be making my rounds across the state this year so if you would like additional trainings/assistance in any or all of these areas mentioned above, let me know. Hopefully as I travel I can meet up with you or a group of members to discuss the use of these mediums even more. Reindeer cleared to land in California

SACRAMENTO, December, 23, 2008– California State Veterinarian Dr. Richard Breitmeyer has granted a 24-hour permit waiving all brand inspection and health requirements for nine reindeer slated to visit California on the evening of December 24 and in the early morning hours of December 25.

The permit application was filed by a rotund, jolly man with a red face and a white beard. He signed the paperwork, “K. Kringle.”

Brand inspection and health requirements—which help veterinarians prevent the spread of animal disease—mandate that all animals entering California be individually identified. The nine reindeer named on the permit are: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blitzen and Rudolph.

The permit was granted under two conditions: the nine reindeer may not co-mingle with other reindeer in the state of California , and the visiting reindeer may not be used for breeding purposes while in the state.

“We are pleased and honored to issue the permit to Mr. Kringle,” said CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura. “As always, we wish him safe travels as he and his reindeer make deliveries to the good children of California .”

Twitter vs Text...FREE? (County Fairs, Texting, Twitter, Social Media)

Follow me and be one of my tweeples on Twitter...oh, before I get started I must warn you, Twitter has a whole new lingo to learn...it's VERY odd at first, but you will like the cheesy corny stuff the further you get into it:)

I might be running myself out of a job on this one, but I'm putting it out there anyways! For those of you who gave me the chance to Text with you this last year and loved it, this may be a great addition to your marketing program. And for those of you who didn't even try Text because you didn't have the finances for it, AND STILL DON'T, this may be your way in.

Twitter is another FREE online program that can be used to interact with your patrons! Yes, it really is FREE and many people set it up to report straight to their cell phones as a Text. That is why I say, you MIGHT have a way in without the use of marketing through actual texting. This is a VERY up and coming program that is on the rise so you might want to check it out if you haven't already. We all know how fast these technology systems catch on, so it may be perfect timing by the time your Fair rolls around next year! Good luck!

I was on the move this year! After spending a year on the move with the WFA Executive Development Program, I couldn't slow down just yet...then again will I ever slow down now? I enjoyed getting out to see several more Fairs, talking to Managers, working with Marketing Personnel and most of all - seeing projects in action that I was honored to have a hand in this year! Boost your BUZZ...you know you want to:) It's just figuring out how to do it AND having it be cost effective-that's the problem...well, I've got it. I just attended my first conference for the winter and it was fantastic. I learned all the strategies we need in the Fair Industry to get the word out at the lowest cost possible ~ Woohoo!!!! It's all about getting a loyal following who will spread the word for you and with you, we all know Fair goers love to interact, so why are we missing out on these ideas?

The picture below is of the website that was live on every screen throughout the conference so that the attendees could see their live feeds including video, photo, blog and twitter conversations. Even having one of these accessible in an obvious/known location at your Fair would create Buzz!It's going to take time discussing the possibilities so that I can give you a boost this year and your staff could take it over as soon as they are ready...believe me I enjoy letting go and seeing you soar, ask Troy Bowers at the Amador County Fair! He knew he could only afford so much help and he's figured it all out so he can be successful year round, give him a call for yourself.

Antelope Valley Fair ADA & Exhibits (Deaf Community Day Event, ADA Committee, AV Fair)

The Antelope Valley Fair hosted it's 1st DEAF COMMUNITY DAY Event, thanks to the help of the ADA Committee's Duane Rumsey. Mr. Rumsey has assisted with other DEAF Events at other Southern California Venues including Disneyland! I started the ADA Committee last year during my first year at the Antelope Valley Fair and continued to work with them again for the 2008 Fair where Mr. Rumsey joined us with this great idea! A picture below shows an interpreter at one of our stages during a Magic Show.
Another project at the Antelope Valley Fair included feedback regarding their Exhibits Programs including Livestock and Still Exhibits.

This special exhibit was on display for the entire run of the Fair featuring Churro Sheep...the 4-horned sheep was a crowd favorite and he even smiled pretty for my picture:)

The BIG hit in the Small Animal Pavilion were the baby chicks!
This beauty was my favorite, if you can notice that LONG feather tail!

I just completed my last Fair Run of the season at the Antelope Valley Fair & Alfalfa Festival! I enjoyed 16 days of craziness and fun with the AV Fair staff, livestock office & council, still exhibits staff, ADA committee, guests and more. It was a pleasure to work with a lot of you again and a lot of you for the first time! Thank you for some great times to add to my Fair Fun Book of Memories!

ADA Committee & Deaf Day (Deaf Community Day Event, ADA Committee, AV Fair)

As my marketing fun wraps up, I will completely switch gears now as the Antelope Valley Fair approaches. I started up an ADA Committee last year who I have continued to work with this year with plans for helping the AV Fair continue to become more friendly towards their patrons with disabilities. One of the new items we are working on this year is a day for the Hearing Impaired. There will be signing interpretors at each stage, show, info booth, first-aid/security area, admission windows and more as well as several on call in case there is a need for special questions or circumstances!

In addition to working with the ADA Committee to observe before, during and after Fair, I am overseeing the Exhibits Departments to provide feedback as well as a written manual for this area of the Fair.

Scavenger Hunt by TEXT (Ventura County Fair, Text Messaging, Mobile Coupon, Social Media, MySpace)

The Ventura County Fair Text Messaging Campaign is interacting with it's subscribers in more ways than one! Taking advantage of texting, MySpace, a scavenger hunt and interest from sponsors (creating more great prizes), the Ventura County Fair is creating a database that will be valuable for use in distributing information year round! It's not just about e-newsletters anymore, people have different ways they like to receive information and as long as you are not spamming their phone, they welcome the valuable notices and special offers.

If there is no other way to get signage on your facility due to expense, schedules and changeout, the restrooms are ALWAYS an option! The men have to stare at a wall and the women have to stare at a door, so what better place...they can't move for the time being!!

I had a great week traveling the beautiful state of California! 1st stop was the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa where we are implementing a daily prize giveaway through texting by announcements and jumbotron advertisements. The Sonoma County Fair is also implementing a daily trivia question through texting by allowing new participants to join at the Fair and playing the game with those who signed up in advance with a specific interest in contests. And I couldn't keep myself from sharing my awesome nephews! I helped Grandpa give them some great haircuts this weekend:)
As my weekend wrapped up and I returned to Southern California, I came across a field of ELK! I have never seen or heard this beautiful animal before, so it was a sight to see and hear (just south of Bishop by 1/2 hour or so). Also, when I stopped for one of my small moments of Cell Phone Reception in Bishop, I had pulled into a parking lot and looked up to see a sign that read, "Tri-County Fairgrounds Mule Days."

Northern California, Southern California, Small Fairs, Large Fairs, and everything in between!

Several Fairs are trying out Texting this year to see how it fits with their marketing strategies...you'll never know unless you try. The San Bernardino County Fair kicked off the Fair Season as my first Fair to use Texting and created a buzz before their patrons arrived as well as while they were on grounds. The Sonoma County Fair is my next Fair in action, followed by the Amador and Ventura County Fairs all within three weeks of each other! We'll be creating lots of interactive fun for patrons including last minute Meet & Greets, Fairgrounds Scavenger Hunts, Special Ringtones and Wallpapers for phones, creating a Coldstone Ice-Cream craze, providing informational updates and more:)

I just completed my first Fair Run of the season at the San Bernardino County Fair! I enjoyed 10 days of excitement with the SBC Fair staff, agencies, vendors, entertainers, guests and safety departments. It was a pleasure to get to know everyone as much as time allowed! I'm glad you all feel like you know me so well that you enjoy seeing a pie in my face too:) If I ever get ahold of a picture of this, I will post it (I'm a good sport)!

San Bernardino County Fair FUN!

The San Bernardino County Fair started on Saturday, May 10th (AKA, Baley's birthday!!!) You have to have a great job to be excited about working on your birthday!

I have been working with the grounds entertainment and strolling acts, doing the Voice of the Fair announcing as well as interacting with the patrons via text messaging.

(Top) Tyzen Paley, the hypnotist puts on two entertaining shows nightly and usually begins with a little magic to relax his guests even more! He's the guy in the middle wearing blue jeans, at this moment he had guys dancing with him then they woke up wondering what they were doing! I guess guys don't dance together like girls do:)

(Center) Tadpole the Clown, strolls the grounds daily by walking or riding around in one of his fun mobile units, making kids feel at home and informing adults by recommending where to go!

(Bottom) The Doo Wah Riders provide two great shows nightly, always bringing in a crowd to their boot-scooting music...one evening, the Fables of the West (little cowboys on horses) couldn't help themselves, they had to get out there to dance!

MySpace is NOT a thing of the past, YET!

While encouraging the creation of Blog and MySpace accounts for additional marketing, I have had regular feedback concerning the expected downturn of MySpace. A graph in this article I read today shows that Facebook is nowhere near hitting the numbers of MySpace just yet. So don't give up on MySpace, try them both out since they are free, but be sure to read their policies before getting too involved!

I hope you all are enjoying your last days, weeks and months leading up to your fairs! My first two fairs (Calaveras County Fair & San Bernardino County Fair) begin in the next week so I'm excited to begin my season :)

I came across a web-page the other day with nearly 100 social networking sites listed.

The most popular question I have received lately is, "Why are you getting involved with so many sites?" The answer is...everybody has their favorite type of site and I want to reach them all so if I put my information on all these different sites, those who prefer the blogging community will see my blog, those who prefer MySpace will go to that page, those who stick to the traditional websites will remain to do so and my most recent additions are becoming part of Facebook and LinkedIn. Each network has its own niche market so I'm going for it! You should too.

It was great to catch up with so many of you at the annual WFA Conference in San Diego last week, both new faces and old faces! Ooops did I say old? That's not what I meant, I meant faces I know, but haven't seen in a while:)

I will be speaking at the WFA Convention on Text Messaging, Tuesday @ 2:30PM (Using New Technologies Panel). If you have more questions after hearing me speak at CFA or if you missed it, I'd love to see you there. I will be sharing the basics of a new way to market your fair!
